Sunlight – there’s nothing like your warm embrace”

“Distance

We used to hold hands on the beach.

When I folded my fingers into yours, I felt for the sand in the hollows of your skin. The gritty sensation helped me to know that it was real.

We sat and listened to the seals and watched them slip in and out of the water,  naming them when they resurfaced. Bonnie, Clyde, Seymour and Elvis.

We found scooters and rode up the hills, mine was faster than yours and we laughed.

When I glimpsed behind me, I saw the lines and folds in your expression, we were lost but knew where to go. We’re so far away now, the time, the distance,  I don’t know if I can ever be that happy.”
